U.S. DOT advances deployment of Connected Vehicle Technology to prevent hundreds of thousands of crashes

Proposed rule would mandate vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication on light vehicles, allowing cars to ‘talk’ to each other to avoid crashes. Citing an enormous potential to reduce crashes on U.S. roadways, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued a proposed rule today that would advance the deployment of connected vehicle technologies throughout the U.S. light vehicle fleet. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking would enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology on all new light-duty vehicles, enabling a multitude of new crash-avoidance applications that, once fully deployed, could prevent hundreds of thousands of crashes every year by helping vehicles “talk” to each other.

What are the safest vehicles on the road?

Tags :

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducts vehicle tests to determine crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash. It also rates vehicles for front crash prevention, systems that warn the driver or brake automatically to avoid or mitigate a frontal collision. The vehicles that perform best in the tests qualify for TOP SAFETY PICK, which has been awarded since the 2006 model year, or TOP SAFETY PICK+, which was inaugurated in 2013.

One of the most dangerous things you can do is drive a car. According to the Association for Safe International Road Travel, globally almost 1.3m people die each year from automobile accidents. In the US, there are roughly 37,000 fatalities each year, which totals about 10 deaths per 100,000 people.

If you’ve paid attention to the tech sites lately, you’d know there are Samsung Galaxy Note 7s that catch fire due to faulty batteries. So far there have been roughly 35 incidents out of 2.5m devices, which means driving a car is much more dangerous yet we ignore the statistics when we drive distracted.

Automatic Pro Review – smart car analytics

Tags :

Automatic is a company that makes small plastic dongles that plug into your vehicle’s OBDII port to analyze your driving style and efficiency in the cloud through an app and web interface. We reviewed the original Automatic some time ago. Based on Bertel’s experience, I found the original product a bit impractical for one reason: Bluetooth. I don’t like Bluetooth. Bluetooth is unreliable, slow, buggy, and finicky in general. The idea of having to sync vehicle data from a dongle over a Bluetooth connection had zero appeal to me – I wanted something that was utterly seamless. And now, Automatic has done just that with the new Automatic Pro. Instead of relying on Bluetooth to transfer data, Automatic Pro uses a built-in cellular connection (free for five years) to send data back to Automatic’s servers. The only time you’ll need Bluetooth is during setup, then you’re free to never have the Automatic dongle and your phone speak to one another directly ever again.

The True Cost of Cheap Gas

Tags :

doylestown auto repairPresident Obama graciously thanked himself for cheap gasoline at a rally in Philadelphia for Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.

To hear him tell it, “Let’s face it; Republicans don’t like to hear good news right now.” And while cheap fuel is indeed something that millions of households and businesses are happy about, including Republicans, many would doubt that Obama is to thank. Meanwhile, businesses in the oil and gas sector and those employed (or unemployed, as the case may be) in the oil and gas sector, along with those in the real estate sector and others who have been struck by low oil prices, may be less than thankful, regardless of their politics.

When NOT to roll down your car windows

Tags :

When cruising the open road, by all means roll down your windows and feel the breeze. But when driving in cities or crawling in heavy highway traffic, keep them shut—and turn off your AC or heater, too. Do this, and you’ll slash the amount of toxic particles pouring into your car by a whopping 76 percent.

Thank researchers at the University of Surrey in England for this lung- and heart-saving tip. “Vehicles emit a number of gaseous pollutants, as well as particles of various sizes,” says lead investigator Prashant Kumar. “All of these are known to harm human health, including increasing risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.” In fact, the World Health Organization has placed outdoor air pollution among its top 10 risks faced by humans, believing it to be linked to 7 million premature deaths every year.

How to keep your teens from texting and driving

Tags :

Whenever I think about how we can stop teens from texting and driving, I think back to an interview I didwith the Dunn family of Roxbury, New Jersey.

Barb Dunn was doing everything right. She talked to her then-16-year-old son Daniel repeatedly about the dangers of texting and driving, and she rode with him as he drove to and from school while he had his learner’s permit.

But when I asked Daniel whether he would ever text and drive, his answer stunned his parents — and me.
“Probably,” he said, although he added that he didn’t think he would text while “driving on the highway.”

Why some Gas Stations Charge Crazy Prices

Tags :

Summer gasoline prices across the nation have dropped to their lowest mark since 2004. AAA says the “best news” is that many motorists are once again paying less than $2 a gallon.

But don’t expect any bargains soon at the Lukoil on Ridge Pike at Chemical Road in Conshohocken, where the price for regular was stubbornly stuck at $2.999 a gallon recently.

“Are you saying it should be priced lower?” asked Tom Hutchinson, the dealer-franchisee. He refers disgruntled consumers to a toll-free Lukoil customer service number posted on the window of the convenience store.
