How to Talk to Your Mechanic

Tags :

We’ve all experienced that fateful day when something in our engine started to clunk, the rear brake squealed, a strange whining came from somewhere or — horror of all horrors — the “check engine” light came on. Yup, we’ve all had to take our cars to the garage at some point. And even if you aren’t big on checkups and frequent fluid checks, there’s no denying your car some attention when it starts making strange noises or emitting strange odors. Perhaps even more dreaded than the orange light on your dash is the very first trip to the garage.

Waymo Autonomous Cars are heading the pack

Waymo test vehicles are requiring less human intervention, Calif. DMV says.

Waymo’s self-driving test vehicles are relying less on humans and are miles ahead of the pack when in comes to driver takeover rates, requiring a human take the wheel about 1,000 times less frequently than some competitors.

On Wednesday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles released its second annual summary of autonomous vehicle driver disengagement reports — defined as situations where a human must intervene while the car is in driverless mode. Waymo, the stand-alone self-driving technology company spun out from Google, reported a decrease in the rate of driver takeovers from 0.0008 per mile driven in 2015 to 0.0002 in 2016.

Fix damage prior to end-of-lease inspection, or get the dealer estimate for repairs first?

Tags :

A Question: “I’ve never leased a car before, so I have no idea what the end-of-lease inspection is like. My 2014 Nissan Leaf is in good condition overall, but I backed into a rock in my driveway one day and scratched /cracked my bumper. I got quoted at 450 to fix the damage without replacing the bumper (bondo for the crack and a new paint job). Here’s my question: do I fix this damage prior to the end-of-lease inspection so that it’s simply not an issue, or do I wait until after the inspection and do it through Nissan-approved channels?

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles uses software to exceed diesel pollution limits.

Tags :

WASHINGTON — The EPA has accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles of failing to disclose software in 104,000 diesel pickups and SUVs that allows them to exceed pollution limits.

The EPA stopped short of calling the software in 2014-16 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500s a “defeat device” but said the carmaker failed to disclose its use. Fiat Chrysler said it meets all applicable regulatory requirements and will work with President-elect Donald Trump’s administration to contest the allegations.

The EPA and California Air Resources Board told the automaker they believe its auxiliary emissions control software allowed vehicles to generate excess pollution in violation of the law.

Vehicle Maintenance is important

Tags :

Technician certification organization ASE surveys show a well-maintained vehicle not only lasts longer, it retains more of its resale value.

With a sluggish economic recovery and today’s consumers watching their finances carefully, it’s no surprise that the average age of vehicles in the United States is more than 11 years old, according to automotive research firm R.L. Polk and Co. With motorists holding on to their vehicles longer than ever before, maintenance takes an even greater importance in keeping roads — and people — safe.

VW says it negotiated $4.3 billion U.S. criminal settlement

Tags :

BERLIN — Volkswagen has negotiated a concrete draft of a criminal and civil settlement worth $4.3 billion with the U.S. Justice Department and said the impact of the accord on its 2016 financial results cannot yet be defined.

Volkswagen said final conclusion of the settlement is still subject to approval by the carmaker’s management and supervisory boards, adding the two bodies will address the matter still late on Tuesday or on Wednesday.

The settlement includes a guilty plea by the German company regarding certain U.S. criminal law provisions and a statement of facts on the basis of which the fines have to be made, VW said.

The deal comes as the automaker seeks to move past its emissions cheating scandal.
