Recyclable Cars

Which parts of your car end up as landfill?

Each year, around 10-15 million vehicles are disposed of in the United States. Luckily, over 95 percent of these “retired” cars head straight to one of the 9,000 vehicle recycling operations around the country and 80 percent of these cars’ parts are completely recycled, letting cars claim top spot as the world’s most recycled product.

How to Talk to Your Mechanic

Tags :

We’ve all experienced that fateful day when something in our engine started to clunk, the rear brake squealed, a strange whining came from somewhere or — horror of all horrors — the “check engine” light came on. Yup, we’ve all had to take our cars to the garage at some point. And even if you aren’t big on checkups and frequent fluid checks, there’s no denying your car some attention when it starts making strange noises or emitting strange odors. Perhaps even more dreaded than the orange light on your dash is the very first trip to the garage.

Fix damage prior to end-of-lease inspection, or get the dealer estimate for repairs first?

Tags :

A Question: “I’ve never leased a car before, so I have no idea what the end-of-lease inspection is like. My 2014 Nissan Leaf is in good condition overall, but I backed into a rock in my driveway one day and scratched /cracked my bumper. I got quoted at 450 to fix the damage without replacing the bumper (bondo for the crack and a new paint job). Here’s my question: do I fix this damage prior to the end-of-lease inspection so that it’s simply not an issue, or do I wait until after the inspection and do it through Nissan-approved channels?

VW says it negotiated $4.3 billion U.S. criminal settlement

Tags :

BERLIN — Volkswagen has negotiated a concrete draft of a criminal and civil settlement worth $4.3 billion with the U.S. Justice Department and said the impact of the accord on its 2016 financial results cannot yet be defined.

Volkswagen said final conclusion of the settlement is still subject to approval by the carmaker’s management and supervisory boards, adding the two bodies will address the matter still late on Tuesday or on Wednesday.

The settlement includes a guilty plea by the German company regarding certain U.S. criminal law provisions and a statement of facts on the basis of which the fines have to be made, VW said.

The deal comes as the automaker seeks to move past its emissions cheating scandal.

How to keep your teens from texting and driving

Tags :

Whenever I think about how we can stop teens from texting and driving, I think back to an interview I didwith the Dunn family of Roxbury, New Jersey.

Barb Dunn was doing everything right. She talked to her then-16-year-old son Daniel repeatedly about the dangers of texting and driving, and she rode with him as he drove to and from school while he had his learner’s permit.

But when I asked Daniel whether he would ever text and drive, his answer stunned his parents — and me.
“Probably,” he said, although he added that he didn’t think he would text while “driving on the highway.”

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.June 23, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Commercial vehicles weighing more than five tons will be prohibited from traveling on Interstate 95 between Exit 13 (Interstate 76 West/Route 291/Valley Forge) and Exit 22 (Interstate 676) in Philadelphia from Saturday, July 23 at 12:00 PM, until midday Friday, July 29, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

What does the check engine light mean when it’s on?

Tags :

That is a signal that the onboard diagnostics system (or OBD II) has detected a malfunction in the vehicle’s emissions, ignition or fuel systems. It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap or something as severe as a faulty catalytic converter, so you shouldn’t ignore it. All cars and light trucks have onboard diagnostics that are supposed to detect engine-related problems that affect the emissions control systems.

The check-engine light (typically a yellow or orange outline of an engine with the word “Check”) should come on for a few seconds every time you start the engine with other warning lights. If it stays on, that means there is a problem.
